Supervisor's Toolkit

With the right toolkit of supervisory skills, you can have a fully functional, motivated, productive team, which is performing to their best combined ability.

'If a man's only tool is a hammer, he tends to treat everything  as a nail'  Abraham Maslow

People can be promoted to supervisor or manager because they are good at what they do. The skills required to do the job are often different to those needed to manage people.  For example; “How do you change from being one of the team to being the boss?” is a frequently asked question.

Having a full range of supervisory skills to draw on allows you to adapt to the situation, handle a variety of people and gain the outcome you need. The aims of this series are to:

  • Provide solutions and practical approaches to everyday situations
  • Create an awareness of the basic people skills required to supervise a team
  • Encourage implementation of those skills to make your role easier
  • Increase confidence to lead and manage people.

What you will learn:

  • Definition of  the supervisory skills necessary to meet the role
  • The difference between leadership and management
  • The importance of communication and team development
  • How to take responsibility for your actions and decision making
  • What is required to get the task done, implement processes and handle difficult situations
  • How to make the most effective use of your time and delegation
  • How to engage and motivate the team.

The open course has three one day sessions covering

  1. Supervision and Communication
  2. Making the Best Use of Time
  3. Maintaining an Effective Team

If delivered in-house; there is a  ‘pick and mix’ approach to the modules for a 3, 6 or 9 day programme, as most appropriate to the business.  The sessions can be run at a time to suit your workload.

Every encouragement is given to apply the learning back in the workplace. It involves participation, group and individual work, for a more effective and enjoyable learning experience.  Small work based assignments between sessions aid the application of learning.

"Ken and Rosie were very helpful, non prescriptive, and very inclusive of us in their design of the workshops. Even during delivery, they rolled with the punches and adapted to specific important issues that emerged. I cannot think of anything that they could improve."
