All too often, good people are promoted without the leadership role training they need. This can be disastrous for the company and highly stressful for the people concerned. Just because they are good at what they do, doesn’t mean they can lead and manage. It is therefore refreshing when an employer gives his budding leaders the right start.
We have just completed an initial two day Leadership in Action programme for a highly progressive Dorset company. The desired outcomes were:
- Everyone understanding the common goal
- Effective communication to obtain positive results
- Proactive solutions to planned outcomes
- Greater control through having the right levels of information
- Better management of the team and upwards
- Improved internal customer service
This was an intensive order in the time scale. The first day was on leadership and communication and the second on engaging the team.
At the post-course review meeting, the delegates identified what they had achieved in the two months since the workshops. A few of these are:
- I have learnt how to listen. I am more pro-active and open-minded to new ideas from my team. They are now sharing their ideas with me.
- It has given me a new outlook on my team and I understand the different ego states. I am now more understanding of other departments and have better communication.
- I have been able to get things done and issues resolved quicker. I am trying to stay in the adult ego state and improve communication.
- It has enabled us to work as a team and encourage others. My team communicate better and support each other.
- The company induction process has been improved to set clearer expectations for new recruits.
- It’s made me more open to difficult situations and people. I plan my day better and try managing upwards more.
- A new waste management proposal was put to the owner and accepted.
The improvements witnessed by the line manager were much greater communication across the departments and the team coping far better through a recent difficult time. The managers are coming with realistic solutions not problems and there is a renewed energy throughout.
Leadership role training is only effective when the delegates, line managers and trainers work in partnership to encourage and support the required results. A united approach can inspire people to take up the mantle of leadership in the workplace.
